Sleep Apnea & Snoring Treatment

If you snore loudly while you sleep, you may be suffering from sleep apnea.  Sleep apnea is a condition defined by a respiratory interference that occurs when you’re asleep, primarily due to tissue blockage in the throat or by the tongue.  Many people are unaware that they have it apart from the most common symptoms of loud snoring and daily fatigue.  If left untreated, sleep apnea can be detrimental to your health and create many systematic risks and indirect complications, such as daytime drowsiness. Dental care can help you find relief from your sleep apnea through an aptly named approach called sleep apnea dentistry.  I suggest a few different oral surgery procedures to my patients that are suffering from sleep apnea:

·         Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty – this procedure removes any excess tissue in a patient’s mouth and throat, making it possible to breathe more easily during the night.
·         Maxillomandibular advancement – the jaw is moved forward, leaving more room behind the soft palate.  This reduces airway obstruction.
·         Tracheostomy – a final resort for patients that have not found relief from other treatments.  A tube is inserted into the throat and keeps the airway open throughout the night.

To find out the best route for relief of your sleep apnea and nightly snoring, please make a visit for a sleep apnea dentistry consultation.

Advanced Training – FAGD

I am always striving to stay up-to-date with the latest dental advancements and technologies.  In recognition of these efforts I am very thankful to have been awarded the prestigious Fellowship Award from the Academy of General Dentistry.  After more than 900 hours of education and preparation, I am now trained in modern general dentistry, Invisalign, TMJ, and sleep apnea and snoring.  With this knowledge and experience, I look forward to helping my patients with their dental care every day.

My commitment to dentistry and to my patients does not mollify after receiving this award.  I am currently pursuing a Mastership Award through the Academy of General Dentistry that requires another 600 hours of continuing education and training.  I look forward to learning more and more about how I can better the health of my patients’ smiles.

Orthodontics for the Whole Family

Many patients seeking smile alignments wonder if and which Orthodontic treatments are right for them, and if there’s an ideal time to be fitted.  Is it too early for orthodontics? Is it too late? At my practice, I believe that there’s no “right” age to come in for an Orthodontic treatment.  My patients range from young children that need to correct developmental bite problems to adults that want to better align their smiles.  My practice offers a variety of orthodontic options to help address a wide range of smile needs, including traditional braces, clear braces, Invisalign, early treatment, and six-month braces.

If you are a parent who’s unsure if your child will need braces, it’s best to bring your child in for an orthodontic evaluation at the first site of any crowding, spacing issues or bit misalignment, even if they’re just baby teeth.  At a younger age, it is easier to move the teeth and monitor any problems that will become more difficult to address with age.  As children move away from bottles, pacifiers, thumb sucking habits and incoming baby teeth, bite problems become recognizable.  In order to begin to address these problems at an age where the teeth are more forgiving, I offer early treatment options.  Early treatment will help with major bite problems as the permanent teeth grow in.

For most children, the permanent teeth have grown in by ages ten to thirteen.  At this point, I can offer my patients traditional braces to fix bite and alignment issues permanently.   My patients with traditional braces come in for adjustments every few months.  To make these appointments easier on the parents, I offer after school friendly hours.  I know your schedules are busy, so my staff and I try our best to make appointments more convenient for the whole family.

Older patients and adults tend to want to steer away from traditional braces.  However, this doesn’t mean you can’t have a beautifully straight smile!  I offer clear braces for patients that are concerned about the metallic look of traditional braces.  With clear braces, the brackets and wires blend right in with the natural color of your tooth.  I also offer Invisalign and six-month braces for those of you that want to better align your smiles in less time.  There are many options to choose from and if you have any questions about them or want to discuss what option is best for you, I invite your call and look forward to our appointment to discuss the best orthodontic options for you.

Expect the Unexpected: Emergency Dental Care

While visiting for a checkup should be a pretty regular and expected thing (Remember, twice a year!) I know that the greatest need for dental care can sometimes occur when you least expect it.  If you’ve chipped or knocked out a tooth, experienced a mishap with a recent prosthetic, if you’ve experienced a reaction, or any number of things that could happen that call for emergency care, you should know that my staff and I are here to help you in your moment of need.  If you need a same-day appointment, call us.  We’ll do everything we can to fit you and help you take care of an oral problem.  If you or your child needs urgent care outside of my typical office hours, I can still be reached and will do everything I can to help you keep your smile safe until I’m able to meet with you for face-to-face care.

Parents, make sure you keep the number of Lewelling Dental handy in event of emergency:  510-276-6040.  Oral and maxillofacial injuries can be common among children.  The sooner you contact me for care, the better we can avoid costly or permanent damage.

As the adage goes, “Hope for the best but prepare for the worst”, and that’s exactly what I’m here to do for my patients.
